In upgrading Gnome-1.4 to Gnome-2.2, what about already
installed Gnome apps?

Looks like you should install fam. I bet you added WITH_FAM to
/etc/make.conf _after_ installing GNOME 2. You should do this _before_
installing GNOME 2.
