gnome 2.2.1 font problems...

I am having the font problem too (no font displayed in terminal
windows), and it appeared after the upgrade to 2.2.1.

For me, I only have the font problem when I launch gnome from gdm.  It
works fine from startx.

I installed the bitstream-vera fonts and made the mods to XF86Config
that were mentioned in the 4.8 Errta, but this did not help.  I
basically solved my problem by bailing on gdm.

I can provide more info if necessary.
