The above procedure has appeared to fix this for me.
I am now getting logged into Gnome within 3 - 4 seconds, and all sound
appears to have returned.., Sorry this has taken this long, Joe - plus
the fact that I could offer more in the way of more intuitive
assistance.., Still its taught me (perhaps more than I'd like to) that
more about Gnome and ESD.
