When were the stable and release branches actually created?

I should clarify this - Uli is spending a lot of time and putting
substantial effort into the conversion. What I mean here is that high
fidelity conversion old branches is both a low priority and I believe
a relatively small portion of the overall effort, and that dropping it
won't make a material difference in when we're finished with the
conversion, in light of the effort required to make sure that we're
ready to deal with subtree / vendor updates in the git world.
