It's not only frustrating; it borders on "impossible" without physical
access to the system.
(unless I'm missing something and it is actually possible to unload/
reload drives using tools and the usb stack -- which I don't know how
to do)

Both are set:
geom_mirror_load="YES"
geom_journal_load="YES"
anything else to help?
