What FreeBSD version? Can you list selected port options? Can you show output
for pkg query '%o: %v'? If ld.bfd is too old try the following:

  $ pkg install binutils
  $ export COMPILER_PATH=/usr/local/bin

FWIW, pkg-fallout@ didn't complain:
