Position-dependent object files compiled for main executable cannot call
protected functions defined in DSOs (PLT cannot be created as otherwise address
uniqueness is not guaranteed), e.g.

/usr/bin/ld: error: cannot preempt symbol: alcGetIntegerv

alcGetIntegerv is STV_PROTECTED defined in a DSO. These object files for main
programs are incorrectly compiled without -fPIC/-fPIE. More appropriate fixes
might be add -fPIE to these programs depending on openal.

https://bugs.llvm.org//show_bug.cgi?id=30960 you'll get similar link errors if
you use modern binutils.
