I believe that I know the root cause (if it's the same problem that I diagnosed
earlier). But my fix is very non-trivial, because it has a domino like effect
on the related ZFS code. So, I am not sure how to proceed from here.

I have a dusty and somewhat logically incomplete but working patch.
At the very least I can rebase it to the latest head and attach it to this bug.
Maybe tomorrow.
