Thanks again.  Because the FreeBSD live CD/USB would have to deal with 
the same problem that I am worried about... they must have worked around 
it.  Probaby a) not using ZFS on the boot CD/USB or b) using ZFS but not 
calling the pool 'zroot'.  I'll find out the next time I boot one up. 
But your point is clear: not something I need to worry about.
