TBH I think that ZFS should just move it's default ashift to 11 and
have 4k blocks by default. Saves all this messing around with
temporary gnop devices.

Documentation that says (in effect) "if you do it the default way with
most common hard drives these days performance sucks, so follow this
convoluted work around" is not that useful - a lot of people will only
come across it when their performance sucks and be disappointed.
