zfs/zpool upgrade

Hi all,

I have one question concerning zfs and zpool upgrades:

Some time ago I saw some postings here with procedures to upgrade to newer
zpool and zfs versions. These contained exporting and importing the pool
(and upgrading in-between, of course :-).
Is the export strictly neccessary? I have no machine where I could try it
right now, but I think I did use zpool upgrade on imported and online
pools before without noticing any problems.
