file(1) cannot detect UFS2?

Not sure if what you're doing *has* to be done with file(1).
However, you can what you want like so:

    #dumpfs ad0s1a | head -1
    magic   19540119 (UFS2) time    Sun Jun 10 21:30:45 2007
