please help - explanation for odd fsck times/behavior needed

The first thing I'd do in your place is actually look at the screen
while the machine is booting.  That way you don't have to guess at
what it's doing.

While it's fsck'ing, press ^T at regular intervals to see what it's
working on and how far along it is.
