For now the solution seems to be to use VueScan under VM (virtualbox).

I've tried with some Ubuntu-10.10 which I have and it works, but, for
some reason, it does not work under WinXP.

In any case, this seems to be good-enough solution not involving pain
attempting to go into troubled waters of upgrading linux-f10 packages.
