BTW, in icedtea they use the following patch:
http://icedtea.classpath.org/hg/icedtea6/file/tip/patches/use-system-tzdata.patch
Together with a system tz.properties file that they also install the patch works
around the issue by having the code go directly to the zi directory without
dealing with any symlinks.
