workaround: revert regressing backport

I've tried
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/fontconfig/fontconfig/-/merge_requests/94/diffs?commit_id=6edaaa4d1823518a97fb4cc3004d110b1046f742
at first but it doesn't seem to help. Maybe we need to backport more commits.
