Updating current i386 broke rc* [not wlan0]...

It seems you didn’t prorperly merge /etc; are you using source
updates or how did you do that?
If you did use src, then an etcupdate or mergemaster run might fix
things.
It seems at least /etc/network.subr isn’t there/updated? There is
probably more...
