tar not working in an i386 chroot (getvfsbyname)

Applying this patch to 9-STABLE (with some fuzz) I get:
# chroot /scratchpad/freebsd10_i386/ tar -cvf /dev/null root
a root
a root/.k5login
a root/.profile
a root/.cshrc
a root/.login
a root/.history
The patch works for me. Thanks
