You loaded the driver??
I built mine into the kernal:
[vic at yeaguy ~]$ grep -i hda /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/HBCA
device snd_hda
[vic at yeaguy ~]$ cat /var/run/dmesg.boot | grep hd

Did you try playing with the MIXER??
i use rexima .. console based mixer, easy to use.
