wpa_supplicant not started

And what about your wpa_supplicant.conf file?
I don't specify ssid or authmode to ifconfig when using the
supplicant. Seems like that sort of defeats the purpose of the
supplicant. Normally these are found in /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf.
