rwatson@ suggested that a recent commit by pjd@ may have fixed this
issue.

I (hand-)applied the fix -- it's for 1.243 of sys/kern/subr_witness.c,
and may be seen at
<http://docs.FreeBSD.org/cgi/mid.cgi?200803171148.m2HBmeWP061368> -- and
each of my laptop and build machine now boot to multi-user mode:

localhost(8.0-C)[1] uname -a
FreeBSD localhost 8.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 8.0-CURRENT #717: Mon Mar 17 12:42:36 PDT 2008 root at localhost:/common/S4/obj/usr/src/sys/CANARY i386
localhost(8.0-C)[2]

freebeast(8.0-C)[1] uname -a
FreeBSD freebeast.catwhisker.org 8.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 8.0-CURRENT #73: Mon Mar 17 12:47:45 PDT 2008 root at freebeast.catwhisker.org:/common/S4/obj/usr/src/sys/FREEBEAST i386
freebeast(8.0-C)[2]

Peace,
