Don't rule out "all of the above." :)

More to the point:
1. I'm pretty familiar with how the current system works, and I also 
know that we've already plucked all the low hanging fruit.
2. I know that the existing system is not exactly what I'd call 
"fragile," but it's not exactly what I'd call "bulletproof" either, 
and therefore anything that proposes to change it dramatically needs 
to have a serious cost/benefit analysis performed before we go down 
that road.
