Why does host and dig show a ; as \;?

This is in the responses as shown:
$ host -t txt blueprint._domainkey.lombardi.com

blueprint._domainkey.lombardi.com descriptive text "v=DKIM1\; p=MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQDCkAwTHQf0339ugaLhgZWCfGWvgzB92PrD03kpk/RsFv5novZZT0QnL2zVXyBFHe2BjbVrfOl9oF33A3hniVrt89iz3dhZD9NWiYsBZl5qYhTfNe7Ia8ZeBb+PuswQnEWG5/aFmkAoDj2L6RHUJlAyjDo4dxCbqnDiFUiV4BqMQQIDAQAB\;"

But the actual record does NOT have the \ in it.

This was confusing to me.
