Abysmal performance on external usb drive

I know you have the latest BIOS version, but check your BIOS settings. 
I've seen many motherboards that have a setting for 1.1 only or both 
1.1/2.0.  This could explain it.

Also, what's the output of 'pciconf -lv'?
