I've had the same problem with mplayer+RTC on (5|6).x, the solution was 
to rebuild the kernel with "options HZ=1160", as well as rebuild the 
emulators/rtc port after each and every kernel update (reloading rtc.ko 
before launching mplayer). Messages regarding "inaccurate timing" and 
weird system freezes disappeared ever since.
7-current doesn't seem to be affected by any of those.
