Actually, one other datapoint that might be related, I tried out my Dell 
box netbooting a RELENG_4 image and I am able to boot with the ATA defined 
in the kernel.

If I try and do this under RELENG_5 or above the computer locks up / goes 
into its hang state when loading it or the USB drivers.
