I have a Thinkpad X31 with ipw; used 1.2 before and now using 1.4.

I don't need it that often, but it works pretty good so far.

The only problem I encountered is a deadlock when loading the firmware
from within X11.

Loading it on the console while X11 is running doesn't make problems
though. Didn't investigate further ...
