Portupgrading portupgrade usaly pose no problem for me. It could be that
you have a problem with ruby dependency. This has a bug.

You could set this, if it happens again: (asuming you use csh)
setenv  PORTS_DBDRIVER  bdb1_hash
setenv  PKG_DBDRIVER    bdb1_hash
