Just to add a data point-

I installed FreeBSD 5.2 or thereabouts on a 386DX machine some months ago 
without any unexpected trouble.  (The expected trouble involved making a 
custom world and set of installation floppies.)  I think I set it up to act 
as a firewall/router, but don't remember if I tested it out much.  It's 
currently in storage.so I can't fire it up to play with too easily.
