OK... then maybe that was a phantom problem. I removed the DRI load
from my XF86Config file and now there isn't a complaint about DRI
missing in the logfile, however:

*** tuxracer error: Couldn't initialize video: X11 driver not configured with OpenGL (Unknown error: 0)
is the real problem that I'm chasing. Now, xdpyinfo gives:
number of extensions: 33
BIG-REQUESTS
DEC-XTRAP
DOUBLE-BUFFER
DPMS
Extended-Visual-Information
FontCache
GLX
LBX
MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
MIT-SHM
MIT-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD
NV-CONTROL
NV-GLX
NVIDIA-GLX
RANDR
RECORD
RENDER
SECURITY
SHAPE
SYNC
TOG-CUP
X-Resource
XC-APPGROUP
XC-MISC
XFree86-Bigfont
XFree86-DGA
XFree86-Misc
XFree86-VidModeExtension
XInputExtension
XKEYBOARD
XTEST
XVideo
XVideo-MotionCompensation
Which does include GLX (but not GL?).
I'm absolutely positive that this worked a couple of months ago.
Dave.
