Well, XFree snapshots as of late seem to require freetype 2.1.8, it even
comes bundled with the source. I would be somewhat surprised to learn
that this is not so in X.org, since it is not that different from late
XFree snaps really, more of a rebadge. In any case, I did have to
upgrade freetype2 manually and now have a recent X snap running
(4.4.99.8)
