I had yesterday the same problems on FreeBSD 5.2-CURRENT from 2004-07-09
when converted DVD to MPEG4 using mencoder. To reach the purpose I used
"cdcontrol -f /dev/acd1 reset", every time when mencoder stopped. :-(
