Page fault while in kernel mode

It was suggested I post to this list from Usenet CUBFM. Here is my post
to that list.

--- original post ---
After upgrading from 5.1 to 5.2, I get a panic when I try to boot. I
can boot into single user mode, but a normal boot produces this:

Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode
fault virtual address = 0x5d
fault code = supervisor read, page not present
instruction pointer = 0x8:0xc059c4de
stack pointer = 0x10:02cbe61bbc
frame pointer = 0x10:0xcbe61bd4
code segment = base 0x0, limit 0xfffff, type 0x1b
= DPL 0, pres 1, def32 1, gran 1
processor eflags = interrupt enabled, resume, IOPL = 0
current process = 508 (lkdload)
trap number = 12
panic: page fault

This is my upgrade procedure:

cvsup /path/supfile
cd /usr/src
mergemaster -p
make buildworld
make buildkernel KERNCONF=KERNELNAME
make installkernel KERNCONF=KERNELNAME
boot -s
fsck -p && mount -a
cd /usr/src && make installworld
mergemaster -i

Everything looked OK on file changes in mergemaster, so I installed
each file.

Per Steve's suggestion, I re-built the kernel with the debug options.
Here is the trace from db> prompt

The 5.2 GENERIC kernel will not boot either.

I hope this is enough to get started.
