FYI: Linux Java GUIs on SMP work better after 5.1 -> 5.2

FYI:

While running 5.1, Java GUIs for some Linux apps didn't play nicely with my 
SMP machines.  The graphical "desktop" for Maple 9, S-PLUS 6.1, and Matlab 
6.5 would crash at random times during startup (or very soon afterwards).  
Mounting linprocfs didn't help.  However, after updating these machines to 
5.2, the GUIs work!  Mounting linprocfs is necessary, but apparently only for 
cpuinfo.
