Thanks, all I have to do now is swap my M-M DB9 cable for a null modem 
cable.  Despite saying "null modem" on the packing, a test with a multimeter 
shows that it's a straight through cable...

Anyway, sorry for bothering everybody, and thanks to those who responded.
