No, in my case, where the make binary was outdated, it didn't help.  
As Ruslan mentioned a 'make installkernel -DALWAYS_CHECK_MAKE' could help.
I found the flag is documented in 'man 5 make.conf', in src/UPATING and in 
src/Makfile.
