As another debugging step, I disabled the onboard nVidia nForce3 sound
on this machine and installed the es1371 card from my old i386 box.

It bombed out with the same error in no time at all.

This is either a non-driver-specific problem with the sound subsystem in
general, or perhaps an amd64-specific problem.  Either way, it's gonna
be a tough nut to crack, I'm sure.  <sigh>
