Laptop Optical CD drive-Laptop 5.2.1 install

Installtion cannot find CD/DVD media....after booting
from very same cd/dvd drive.
Tee drive is on a media base that connects over
firewire
Works fine in 4.x at every stage of the install and
use.
Do i need to enable something in the kernel before the
drive will work? What to do-thanks
