You can use whatever you want. Go to /usr/ports/www/mod_php4 and install it
from there or download the source yourself from php.net and compile it.
FreeBSD does not require PHP for it to function. That is an addon the end
user (in this case, you) would want to put on there and can therefore decide
which version you wish to use. In my opinion, for someone starting out on
FreeBSD and/or *Nix, it's best to just go to the ports tree and build it
from there as it does all the compiling for you. Once you begin to get more
familiar with the OS and how to compile, configure, install things on your
own, then you can come back and put php on yourself using your own configure
line.
