buildworld freeze in share/doc/papers/beyond4.3

The last couple CVSup's I've done (one a couple days ago, one last
night), make buildworld has hung when building in
share/doc/papers/beyond4.3, when running groff.  Groff runs with
near-full processor consumption indefinately (I started the buildworld
at 11:30 last night, and groff was still running at 7:25 this morning -
a buildworld usually takes me about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs).
