5.2-BETA from USB CD-ROM

I grabbed the miniinst 5.2 ISO, and tried to install it on an IBM thinkpad
X23 via an IBM USB CD-ROM (the machine has no internal floppy or CD). It
boots fine, and I can proceed with the installation up to the point where
it newfs-es the filesystems. Then it stops, saying "can't mount /dev/cd0 on
/dist: device not configured (6)"

Any ideas? Requests for more debug info?
