help! 5.1 doesn't do the rc thing?

Yes, of course :)
That's why I'm perplexed. I let it install the files it wanted to,
except for obvious things I didn't want overwritten: passwd file,
sendmail config, etc.

Just to verify: my old rc.conf should be read (and honored) right?
