vchans seem to affect /dev/dsp* availability

No:

(2) netchild at ttyp2 % sysctl hw.snd.maxautovchans
hw.snd.maxautovchans: 0

and I still get it sometimes too. I just noticed it yesterday while
trying to record something via line-in and playing it back after recording it.

(3) netchild at ttyp2 % dmesg |grep pcm0
pcm0: <VIA VT82C686A> port 0xe400-0xe403,0xe000-0xe003,0xdc00-0xdcff irq 5 at device 7.5 on pci0
