The 2mb L2 cache on the Pentium M makes a big difference in compliation. 
  In other cases, it doesn't matter much.

The T42 also runs FreeBSD very well.  All of the hardware on mine is 
supported, except, I think, the modem.  I've never had reason to want to 
use it, so it's not a problem for me.
