They use pointers.

They just don't let *you* use pointers.

Mostly because their smarmy designers believe they are smarter
than all their users -- after all, if you were smart enough to
use pointers, you would have written your own high level language
that doesn't permit people less intelligent than you to use
pointers and thus screw up software you might want to run some
day...
