I've run into this problem again trying to boot an 12.1-RC2 installer on a
server currently running vanilla FreeBSD 12.0-RELEASE. This one has mirrored
SSDs for boot and a pool of 24 disks grouped into mirrors (with two reserved
for hot spares). :(

(I have been corresponding with Toomas by email but I wanted to document this
publicly as well.
