I have applied the change you linked to to releng/12.0 r343997 and the issue is
still present. Manipulating the loader disk variable currdev does nothing and
changing lodadev is not permitted. Which doesn't matter since the loader still
can't traverse the filesystem.

I would like to request that this issue be escalated to critical and added to
the 12.0 errata. Since STABLE is supposedly fixed, it should be possible to
identify the exact code that causes this.

A brief note: In a VMWare VM, IDE fails but SATA and SCSI work. On my machine,
SATA(AHCI) fails.
