I entered the Chinese characters 你好, hexadecimal $'\xE4\xBD\xA0\xE5\xA5\xBD'.
In fact that's only for trying, I couldn't enter any Chinese character at all. 

I set LC_ALL *after* I login from ssh. Before setting it to *.UTF-8, non-ASCII
bytes got translated and echoed back as ^G <BEL> characters.
