Interesting ...

This code originated in NetBSD but we have diverged quite a bit over the years.
For maintainance purposes we still would like to keep some similarities.

If we have to diverge further, it is OK, but please try to reduce somewhat the
differences: rename islastentry to utf8, adopt enough of their patches so that
it fixes the issue.
