Thanks. It sounds like you have seen something similar before?

I've just tried commenting out snmpd and snmptrap from /etc/rc.conf but the
problem still occurs. I haven't run sysctl -a.

In better news, I've found an even similar way to trigger the deadlock.

1) Boot the OS into multiuser
2) Login on the console as root
3) Type ps followed by enter. ps never returns.
